washi workshop

hey everyone! we're doing a little blog hop today in honor of the upcoming washi workshop at studio calico. this class is taught by the fabulous megan hoeppner of creating keepsakes, and i'm one of eight contributors joining in on the fun. =)

washi is one of my favorite products right know. i love the colors, i love the texture, i love how dang easy it is to use.

piggyback

for all the complaining alex does about his annoying little brother, he's awfully tender hearted about the smallest dude. ;) i have no patience for sam's "i'm too tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiireeeeeeeeeeeeeed to walk" business, but he's got alex wrapped around his little finger. it really is just too sweet. my collection of alex piggybacking sam on the way home from school photos is growing like crazy, so i thought i'd use a couple on a page. i started with some veeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrry light misting, then cut a strip of fabrip and clustered my elements above and below it. the circles are cut from the new banners - i'm really loving using them one or two at a time.

this page comes with a challenge - break out the patterned paper backgrounds! you can find all of the details at the studio calico blog. i love that the subtle pattern on my background here keeps a fairly simple page from looking too sparse. you can find the full supply list here at SC or here at 2peas, depending on your shopping habits. ;)

happy tuesday!! after a wet and rainy weekend, it's sunny and warming up quickly today. i'm glad - we have teeball / baseball tonight and tomorrow, a field trip with sam's preschool tomorrow, and our elementary school's field day on thursday and carnival on friday. so hope the good weather holds for all of the fun!

studio calico 35mm

so. every month i blog my kit layouts ahead of time and schedule the post to go live with the kit. and i had it on my to do list. and it wasn't till 5 minutes before reveal that i realized that i hadn't actually gotten around to drafting the post this month. OOPS. =) so, slightly belatedly, let's say hello to 35mm.

i've got a LOT of pages of sam swinging, but i couldn't resist adding another. these photos were too fun not to scrap. i love that he's basically out of the frame on the second photo! i used my cameo to cut the title from my photo - kind of digging this technique right now. i backed it with the woodgrain pp and then arranged the photos on my background. from there, i added the hexagon diecuts around the page and then surrounded each with a variety of shapes, including the exclusive hexagon stamp and mistable thickers.

i've played with big numbers and the cameo before, and had to try it again. i thought this would make a fun intro page to all of ben's baseball LOs for this year - the season is just starting and i'm sure there will be more! i cut the 2 to hang off the page, then traced it onto another piece of cardstock. i added strips of patterned paper over the traced 2, then laid the negative from the 2 back over the top. you could easily recreate this with printing a large 2 and then using it as a guide to handcut.

as soon as i saw this diagram paper from the lomography addon, i knew it would be the perfect fit for these photos of alex building a bridge in the sand. all the blues and yellows in this month's kit are perfect for beach pictures. my background is misted with mister huey in gold, and my title letters were cut with my cameo. i mixed tone on tone cardstock with a couple of letters cut from the diagram paper, and then did the same with handcut triangles as accents. to make the banner, i cut pieces from several of the mistable banners, misted them with mister huey in heirloom blue, then pieced them back together.

my friend becky and i recently spent the day at the offices of bhg scrapbooks etc - and i left totally amped up about this wonderful hobby. i plan to eventually do a mini book with all of the photos, but wanted to get the basic awesomeness of the day onto a page while the feeling was fresh! 

i'm kind of loving arrows right now, and cut out a few that matched the arrow from the heidi swapp stamp set to add to my page. i didn't want to waste the negative, so i added that as well. i misted both the arrows and the negative with shine to make them stand out a bit more.

once i'd finished my layouts, i couldn't resist putting together a quick card. i challenged myself to use only the scraps next to my paper trimmer - no new cuts!! the circle was already punched into the diagram paper, and it made a perfect frame for the hello there stamp from brownie. from there, i just crisscrossed some strips of pp and tape left over from my "2" layout, then added stitching and embellishments.

happy saturday! i'm making cinnamon rolls for ben's sleepover buddies (they went to coco key + spent the night as an early bday celebration) and refreshing the little league site to see if we'll play today or not. there's a lot of scrapping and baseball in my future. and hopefully a nap. but i doubt it. hope you all have a great weekend! 

35mm sneaks

35mm turned out to be one of those kits that practically scrapped itself.  i LOVE that. =) most of my favorite pieces this month were in the main - the new exclusive diecuts, the hello forever badges, the traingle confetti washi - and they showed up on most of my pages.

this one is my main only layout for the month. i started with the hexies and the circles, and just couldn't stop playing with shapes. i added in stars, tiny triangles, and asterisks.

i know i say it all the time...  but i LOVE my cameo. big die cut + lots of paper strips here. it was fun to put together, and the finished product makes me smile.

happy wednesday! sam's heading to a buddy's house after preschool, so it's just me, myself and i this afternoon. well, me and my scraproom mess. i'm determined to tackle my floor piles today - i've got to get things in order before my new shelves come. it's time to crank up the tunes and get things done. =)

studio calico blog blitz

hi all! now that the new studio calico collections are hitting stores everywhere, we wanted to do a little blog blitz to show them off. =) i mean, totally a good excuse to share some inspiration and giveaways, right?

the weather has been gorgeous here, and we've been walking a LOT lately. i love that we live in a very walkable neighborhood, and as the boys get older it's easier to take advantage of it. this page design started with the triangles. i came across this pin on pinterest and loved the way the triangles were anchoring the photo to the page. i used the plano mask (coming SOON!) + watercooler mist (new favorite) behind the photos to break up all the straight edges, then added the tag, veneer stars and confetti. i love it when a page comes together this quickly.

more new studio calico

working with new lines to make a project for a cha booth is always an interesting challenge. there's usually a time constraint. you're working with limited product. and for this last show, since i was the last member of the SC team to hit the ground in California, my booth assignments were to work with the stuff that came in last minute + any products that didn't get featured in the other layouts.

first, i had the mist assignment. ie : use as many of them as possible. i took this as a personal challenge and used every dang color except white. a box of prototype mist was overnighted to me. prototype = no labels. kelly hooked me up with the pantone color number list that they'd used, and i slowly sorted out which bottle was which color, then sprayed samples of all of them and arranged them into a color wheel.

then i misted. and misted. and misted some more. i used the plano mask, and masked off one wedge at a time. i actually covered my dining room table in newspaper and misted there - it was too hard to do this inside of a box. i covered all but one section of the mask and made sure the paper i was using to mask off the rest of the page went all the way to the edge. I aimed the mist towards the center of the mask and sprayed 2-3 times - that's why the color is more concentrated towards the center.

once that was done, i added the patterned paper, photo, and stitching. the veneer, letters, badge and clips were added once i got to the show. it kind of pained me not to be able to stich those thickers down. ;)

 

my second assignment kind of made my head spin. it came in stages. "can you do a page w/ fabrip flowers, using the take note line?" (this one took some thinking. i don't make many flowers. HA.) and then "oh, and could you use the plano stamp, no one else did." and THEN, "and we'd really like an aqua or yellow background, we need a pop of color in that display" and once i got to the show "any way you can work the stitched tags in?"

and somehow...  i got it all onto the page. and i even like how it turned out. ;) again, the paper part was all done at home, as well as the flowers. the chipboard, veneer, tag and badge were added once i got the cali. i definitely couldn't work like this all the time, but CHA time is always a bit of a creative workout. 

some good news to end this crazy post - most of the studio calico products are hitting stores now! the veneers should be in soon - these are my favorite and i can't wait to see how everyone uses them.

so. it's monday. we got a lot accomplished outside this weekend - and i'm hoping to get a lot accomplished inside this morning. the plan is to knock out another project life week today - fast & furious style. i've got all the pics planned for weeks 11, 12 and 13 - i wonder how much progress i can make this week?

i'm so happy to see the new SC goodies popping up in stores - i have loved working with this line, and excited to see what everyone does with it! for this page, i mixed in some of my april kit leftovers + the exclusive dear lizzy date stamp from story hour. 

i started this page with the ampersand. i used the negative from the cut on my sketchbook 4 page, and it was still sitting on my desk.  when i'm working with a big element like that, i like to find a place for it on the page and then arrange my other elements around it. (btw, sketchbook 4 registration closes TODAY - i love these sketches and refer back to KP's old classes all the time!)

here's what i used to mist the circles along the side. it's what was leftover after punching out the pieces for a new board game. since it's nice thick chipboard, i think it will hold up fairly well - i can't wait to use it more!

happy saturday! we kicked the weekend off early - ben had a 9am ball practice. i've been sitting here watching neighbors working in their yards - i suppose it's that time of year. and i suppose i should join them. have a good weekend!

city of lights

city of lights is live! another month, another kit, right? this one is filled with some gorgeous exclusives from sassafras and studio calico, as well as new crate and jenni bowlin. the mix of papers in the main just makes me happy.

i figured such a pretty kit was a good excuse to put myself on a page for once - with three boys, i don't often get to go all out girly. ;) i loved the little arrow section of the Sassafras exclusive patterned paper and used it as a starting point for my page. from there, i added my photo and then filled in with little pieces of PP - playing with different shapes and textures.

there's a big decision in alex's future - i wanted to get that down onto a page. the tag pulls out for some hidden journaling - just some thoughts on pros and cons behind the school decision. i have been DYING to have this pattern as a background stamp - sososooooo excited that it happened! i cut out different sized triangles and then backed them with patterned paper. the kesi-art pie chart paper was perfect for the theme of this page - i cut it down to a square and then stitched it in place along with some embellishments and journaling. i used Pinstripe Mister Huey and the Plano mask on the background of the page - both will be in the SC shop soon.

matthew and i went down to kansas city this month, and spent a few hours exploring an antique mall with 4 floors. some of these treasures came home with us and some didn't, but i figured they all needed to be recorded! i started this page by cutting the "4" with my cameo (Bebas font) and then arranging my photos into a grid. i left a few blank spaces and filled them in with triangles - i'd just been looking at pinterest, it seems triangles are EVERYWHERE right now! i balanced the page off with a couple of larger blocks + some messy stamping, then added sequins and brads.
