2012 : captured // may : project life week 16

there's just something about this time of year. my 2011 book is missing several weeks in the late april / early may time range. and now my 2012 book is as well. i'm once again contemplating a catch up plan. i've got week 15 half done, and have weeks 17 and 18 mostly mapped out. i need to sneak some time to at least get photos printed!

though i may be a smidge behind, my 2012 : captured class for may went up this morning. this month, we're talking about stickers. they're a quick and easy way to dress up a journaling card - and i'm all about quick and easy right now. i've been joined once again by two fabulous guests - emily spahn & lisa day. you can see their pages here (emily) and here (lisa). they both used stickers in some really fun way on their weeks - i hope you'll check both of them out! we're also all talking a bit about staying on top of photos - both taking them & organizing them.

i've shared a quick and easy tutorial for making photo collages using picasa over at the 2peas blog. collages are becoming my go to for those events that come with too many photos - i've used them in quite a few weeks this year!

happy tuesday!! after a wet and rainy weekend, it's sunny and warming up quickly today. i'm glad - we have teeball / baseball tonight and tomorrow, a field trip with sam's preschool tomorrow, and our elementary school's field day on thursday and carnival on friday. so hope the good weather holds for all of the fun!

week 13 // march 24th-30th : someone turned 11. ;) someone else took timed multiplication tests. and someone else got some quality swinging time in.

i've been dying to try the big divided pic - heavily inspired by KP & elise. love the look, and this was a perfect candidate. the A + washi was from one of his gifts. the chevron bag up top holds more photos, journaling, and the reciept from his 3ds purchase. =)

rather than do an insert, i opted to highlight the birthday and then cram everything else into the second page.

happy friday! sorry to PL post and run - my friend becky and i are road tripping to des moines to visit the scrapbook etc offices today. we'll be meeting with their project life group and playing in the craft lab - and michelle has a fun lunch + shopping excursion for us. SO excited. totally a fun way to start the weekend!

i love project life. i might grump about getting behind. i might get cranky about the planning / printing stage (okay, so that's a definitely, not a might). i might sometimes think - am i crazy for taking this on for a second year in a row? but honestly - it's the most rewarding scrapping i do. it has a voice that isn't heard on my layouts. i scrap for ME, i project life for all of us.

i.love.my.cameo. LOVE. the more i play with it, the more i realize how fabulous that it is. i love cutting fonts, i love cutting shapes from the silhouette store, and i love tracing digital brushes and turning those into cut files. i love that i can turn digital products into something that works for my paper scrapping ways.

 

for this week's memory keeping monday, i'm turing a digital template into a cut file for my silhouette. in a way, it's almost like using a sketch and bringing it straight to your paper. how cool is that? there's a step by step how to in the video. i decided to mix it up a bit by cutting two of the sections from patterned paper, cutting two to use as a mask for misting, and the last one i filled in w/ a variety of bits and pieces. i will definitely be using this technique again - i've got my eyes on erica's new triangulation tempates to try next.

one more thing this morning : i wanted to share a little more digi project life fun. erica made a set of fabulous FREE journaling cards for my 2012 : captured class. all you have to do is go like 2peas on facebook, then click on the freebie tab up top. too cool, right?

she used my diecut + washi technique that i shared yesterday for one of the cards, and i *may* have begged her to make it a whole set. and she did. and i cannot wait to play with them.

there are a couple more PL friendly kits up at 2peas today - a 4x6 template set by chrissyw and a set of journaling cards by edeline marta. i love new journaling cards. =)

it's time for the april edition of 2012 : captured!  these months we're talking about washi tape. man, i love tape. i ended up with 18 different ways to use it - 2 of those came from my fabulous april guests, marcy penner & kristin tweedale. you can see their pages here (marcy) and here (kristin). i'm loving what they contributed, and hope you will too!! i'm also sharing some thoughts and tips on getting caught up - now that we're getting into a busy time of year and the newness of project life has worn off, i thought it would be timely.  i've been working on getting back to currently myself, so these ideas come from a very "been there, done that" place. ;)

week 14 // march 31-april 1 : baseball, brackets, birthday parties, bike rides and the breast stroke. highs of 90, highs in the 60s. just another spring week.

they played in the sprinkler. on april 2nd. that is so not right.

i had to put my 2peas art from kristina into the book. it made me smile to see that box on my porch!

happy monday! our weekend did NOT go as planned. at all. ben's first ball game was called for lightning after 1 inning, and his second ball game was cancelled because the fields were way too wet.. the threat of some really nasty weather kept me home from the crop. sam's bday party was bumped from saturday to sunday - again, due to weather reports.. thankfully, things didn't get bad as they had predicted. and i did get to enjoy some downtime with my favorite boys.

another week closer to current! i've got week 14 printed and on my desk - i'll be using it for my april class at 2peas. i've got week 13 printed & have already started planning week 15 - i plan to take those + my KC insert to a crop with me on saturday. that will just leave week 5 that needs to be filled in. and it feels good. =)

tutorial : digital frames to journaling cards

i had a bit of an aha moment regarding digital frames the other day. i have a couple of sets that i love and want to use in project life, but adding a frame to a photo before printing just doesn't fit my workflow. i edit / print my pics in lightroom - and i've gotten it to the point where i can do it quickly - and i really don't want to add another step to the process.

so i turned them into something that DOES fit my process. with a few tiny tweaks, i was able to turn them into something i can preprint and use as i go. i can trim out the center and add a photo behind. i can use them for journaling. i can add a photo to the middle and stitck it in place with washi. lots of possibilities.

i started with the polaroid microscrappers by bananafish studio. they're already sized for PL - which makes the process super simple.

these files come as .png & .psd - you'll need pse or ps to open them.

next you'll want to open a neutral digial patterned paper and drag it onto the frame. i used an offwhite linen texture.

now you just flip flop the layers so that the paper is under the frame. yep. it's that easy. now you just flatten the image (under layers) and repeat with any other frames you want to use. then put them all on an 8.5x11 background and print out on plain white cardstock. if you're not sure how to do these, i've got a tutorial on the 2peas blog with some how tos.

with these printed out and in front of me, i set out to try the same idea with erica hernandez's frames from her indexed collection. her frames aren't sized for PL, but since they're simple and graphic i was able to resize them without any visible distortion.

pull your frame into pse / ps and find resize under the image menu.

i sized mine just under 3x4 - i like a little wiggle room in the pockets.

since erica's frames are mostly solid, i decided to add journaling lines to the middle. these come from her framed in journaling card set. drag them onto the frame.

flip flop those layers so that the lines are under the frame.

then flatten your image so you can print!

week 11 // march 10th-16th : a birthday party. the batting cages. friends. my birthday! time with grandma. this week also included matthew and i going down to KC alone, but that's going to go into an insert. i'm planning on using one of these simple stories page protectors - but the box they're coming in won't be here till later today. i'm also missing the birthday invite that i want to put in the top left pocket. i just saw it the other day - i KNEW i should have taken the time to stick it in the book right then!

another get it done fast. lots of preprinted journaling cards and washi tape. the little bits of paper were all on my desk from previous projects.

when i'm taking a pic of something small, i like to lay it on patterned paper - it definitely helps showcase it!

project life 2012 // week 10 mar 3-9

and so we've reached the point in the year where i start to slip behind. i'm doing my best not to freak about it...  but it's time for some good old fashioned get-it-done-fast weeks. not so fast that i hate them when i'm done, but i'm definitely moving faster than usual. no second guessing, just throw it together and put it in a pocket!

week 10 // march 3-9 : out for breakfast, basketball madness, blanket forts, paper airplanes, days off school. meeting marcy. ice cream!

i've had some questions from people who want to get started with project life, but are having a hard time getting the page protectors. i wanted to share a few other brands that are making divided page protectors - any of these would work well for a year long album. remember, you can always use 2 3x4 journaling cards in a 4x6 slot to get the same look as using smaller pockets!
